   WHY WE RESIST CHANGE

1.  
Change is out the employees control
       We need to be in control ( they don’t ask for it and generally are not included in the
decision of it.)
               As a leader you develop the trust ahead of time.
Keep the employees in the communication loop, even if all you can say is " I don't have all
the answers, but what I do know is........"

2.  
We don’t understand why the change is necessary
       We need to know the why to be rational about change.  We may not agree with the
change, but we will understand the reasoning behind it.
       Leaders:  Involve your team in determine how the change will be implemented
               Inform them of options and encourage participation
       More involvement = more ownership.
       If involving all employees is not possible, involve a small group and have them assist
with positive word tracks. Word of caution.  Be sure the message stays the same as it is
passed on.

3.   
We have excelled the old way – why change
       Even if the new way is faster and easier, we have been successful the old way and
cannot feel the success in the new way –
       Leaders:  Acknowledge the old success and encourage the employees that it is their
talent that made the old way successful and they still have that talent. Be sure not to look
down at the old ways, but praise the old and embrace the new.

.  We are not capable of change
       We lack the confidence in ourselves to change – we will never learn that computer
program.  We feel inadequate.
       Leaders;  Foster confidence and find things about the change they CAN do well and
praise them  - let them know you will be with them through the change and will provide the
necessary training without pressure.

5.  Perceive it takes too much effort – Not worth it
       Only looking at the downside – can’t see the upside – feel it is not  worth it – why put
the effort in?????
       Leaders: Communicate the benefits and remind everyone including yourself that
change and growth is necessary to secure jobs and place in the marketplace.
REMEMBER THE ONLY CONSTANT IN LIFE IS CHANGE!
